Viewing Heart Rate, HRV, and Sleep with Apple Watch

Apple Watch uses optical heart sensors and other hardware to record heart rate and can save supported HRV and sleep data to HealthKit. These are not direct tests of stress, autonomic function, fatigue, recovery, or disease.

Feelmo helps you review permitted Apple Watch / HealthKit records in a clearer morning view.

Can Apple Watch measure the autonomic nervous system?

Cardiac autonomic regulation contributes to HRV. Breathing, posture, time of day, exercise, sleep, medication, health, movement, and measurement error also affect it.

One HRV value therefore cannot directly measure sympathetic activity, parasympathetic activity, or overall “autonomic balance.” A 2026 methodology guideline likewise cautions against using HRV as a specific marker of cardiac sympathetic outflow or as a simple sympathetic-versus-parasympathetic balance.

See Apple's heart-rate guidance for information about viewing heart and HRV records.

Can Apple Watch measure stress?

Heart rate and some HRV measures can be associated with psychological or physical stress on average across groups. They are not direct sensors of one person's perceived stress.

One low HRV or high heart-rate value cannot establish high stress, illness, or a need to rest. A Feelmo screen labeled “stress” is also an in-product reference, not a direct measure of perceived stress or a diagnosis.

What is Feelmo Balance?

Balance is an in-product display that uses proprietary on-device processing to summarize HRV-derived information available through Apple Watch / HealthKit and patterns in your own past. Processing and display rules are not public.

  • The 0–100 value is specific to Feelmo, not a medical normal range.
  • Use it to review your own records, not to compete with another person.
  • A higher or lower value does not directly show emotion, fatigue, stress, recovery, or health.
  • The six companions are product characters, not determinations of emotion or condition.

What happens when I wear Apple Watch during sleep?

When Apple Watch sleep settings are enabled and you wear it at night, supported records may be saved to HealthKit. Feelmo reads compatible records only within the permissions you grant and handles them on device.

Large movement may be lower during parts of sleep, but turning in bed, fit, skin contact, blood flow, hardware, and software can still affect the record. Having a record does not make the wearable equivalent to a clinical ECG or sleep study.

Content and update timing may vary with HealthKit record availability and other conditions. Feelmo does not publish its proprietary update or display rules, and neither nighttime wear nor more records guarantees an accurate Balance or forecast.

What can I do in Feelmo on Apple Watch?

  • View the latest Balance and product character.
  • View a supported current heart-rate display.
  • Start a guided-breathing session from your wrist.
  • Add supported Feelmo complications to a watch face.

Do not interpret product wording or characters as a measurement of your current condition. Detailed records and longer look-backs are available in the iPhone app.

Tips for wearing Apple Watch at night

  • Charge it before bed as needed.
  • Follow Apple's guidance for a fit that is neither too tight nor too loose.
  • Keep the sensor back and your wrist clean and dry.
  • If a day is missing, continue on another convenient day.

If the morning display is missing

  1. Check that Apple Watch is connected to the iPhone.
  2. Check for a record in the Health app.
  3. Review Feelmo's HealthKit permissions.
  4. Reopen Feelmo.
  5. Install available updates for iOS, watchOS, and Feelmo.

“Learning” and blank states are in-product statuses, not indications of health. See Setting up Apple Watch and HealthKit and When Balance does not appear for more help.

Privacy

Feelmo processes HRV-derived data and Balance on device and does not automatically send them to Provider servers. If you start an export or share, selected content goes to your chosen destination. Apple storage and syncing follow your settings. See Data and privacy.

Not a medical diagnosis

Feelmo is not a medical device and does not guide diagnosis, treatment, or activity safety. Seek qualified medical advice for health concerns regardless of the display.
